Antique Pair of Historical Ship "Berlin" Vase Carvings
Imagine how I felt whenever I found these!!!! One of my relatives came over on the Mayflower and another on the "Berlin" so many years later! I am so happy that I now own these since they are actually a piece of my family history!!! A Great Christmas present!!!
Pair of Carved Pilasters of Vases of Flowers which came off the turn-of-the century Ocean Liner, the S.S.Berlin. The German built liner Berlin was famous in the years before the First World War, not only for its first class luxury travel but also for the many refugees it brought as steerage passengers to ELLIS Island , New York.
The carved pilasters were taken from the 1st class Lounge on the ship- along with a Neptune figure. The Berlin was later sold to White Star Lines and then taken to Portsmouth. England where she was completely stripped of her original decorations, then refitted, and her name changed to the ‘Arabic’. She was dismantled in Italy in the 1930s.
The Floral Carvings are made of pitch-pine and stand 40 inches high each .
I have added a photo of the Berlin as well.
The Berlin was later used by Germany to place a mine that sank the British Ship "Audacious." This can be seen on a short documentary on youtube.
Very cool and links to the family.
