This is something I picked up at the Rose Bowl in early December. It is the MPC Diatryma prehistoric bird. They started making these in 1962. Usually MPC just made slightly smaller versions of the Marx Dinosaurs but in 1962. But in 1962 they came out with a 12 figure set that included five creatures Marx had not produced. This is not a large figure. It is probably less than 3" tall. The colors tended to be rather bright such as the yellow example seen in the last three photos. The other usual colors were blue and silver. The reddish brown is one of the less common colors. Possibly it was released as a cereal premium of some of these were.
The actual creature lived in the Eocene Epoch from about 58-37 million years ago. It was seven feet tall and probably an apex predator. This was when the age of the mammals began. It probably went extinct due to large cats and other mammals.

This is a Moa or Megalypteryx [sp?], isn't it? or maybe an Andalgalornis steuletti?
    13. ho2cultcha ho2cultcha, 7 years ago

Thank you very much ho2cultcha. Diatryma is also known as Gastornis and it is like the terror birds but is from the northern hemisphere. I think the terror birds were in South America.
This has a much larger head and has a sternum unlike the Moas. The beak is smaller than the terror birds.
