Here's something completely different from my usual fare - a piece of 1980s studio art glass by an Australian glass artist, Ian Mowbray.
This was an op shop find several years ago - the colours appealed to me, & I do have a bit of a thing about the 1980s. This piece definitely has a strong Memphis design influence about it.
It measures 23 x 23 cm square, & 4.5 cm tall. The base colour is black, with diagonal stripes in blue & pink - & it reminds me of a liquorice allsort.
The dish is signed underneath - Ian C. Mowbray 1984.
Whenever I find signed studio glass in op shops I sell it on, but this one is a keeper.

Yeah, love the 80s vibe! Is this blown or slumped glass IL? I'm not sure of the technique.

Thanks racer - I believe this is an example of slumped glass. Yes, the 80s still do it for me - some may say that I have never left them...the 1880s as well, of course!

I totally get why you've kept this......it's mesmerizing in an inexplicable way. Also I know you're not alone in having some glass which is at odds with your collecting area(s).

Inexplicably mesmerizing is a great description! It certainly does have a hypnotic quality to it...

Lovely find and very different to your usual fare, lol. It's so modern and jazzy. If you hadn't said I'd have thought it was ceramic, it's very unusual looking glass.

Many thanks, Vintagefran! Yes, slumped glass has a very different look to other glass techniques. I'm no expert on modern studio glass, but I think the technique became particularly popular in the 80s & especially in Australia. It has a certain "flatness" & opacity to it, perhaps due to being made up from overlapping layers...& it often favours simple, angular forms.
