Seems like a totally appropriate moment to show this old coat, since the last pic is what I'm looking at out my window today. (instead of going to work, that is...) It is thick and heavy (and warm!!) made of black cashmere wool with collar, three buttons, two front pockets, and cuffs on the sleeves. Two breast pockets within its silk-ish inside lining and two labels -- the large one at the neckline reads "100% IMPORTED CASHMERE" with a crest logo, and the other on one breast pocket reads "MARK HOPKINNS EXCLUSIVELY O'BRIEN-JOBST PEORIA".
I don't really know exactly how old it is, but I've had it myself for about 30yrs. I got it from a friend who (I believe?) said it had belonged to his father, so I always sorta figured it might be 1940's or so -- but in a little online searching now I'm finding references to O'Brien-Jobst having been a Peoria (IL) clothing retailer active in the 1920's -- so maybe its older than I thought it was. (??) No matter how old it truly is, it remains in pretty good condition, with nothing but the slightest few little spots of wear/etc. on it in places that aren't obvious at all.
Looks cozy:)
THANKS Trey, kyratango, and fortapache for your <love its> -- Trey, it is *indeed* surprisingly cozy...esp on days like today when it remained hanging in the closet here in the house with me all day, instead of having to actually go outside where all that dreadful cold white sh*t is otherwise laying all over everything... :-( Even on those (relatively few) sorts of days here, and despite its kinda open neckline/collar, this coat seems indeed built for places like Peoria...remarkably able to hold 'body heat' in while keeping 'winter wind' out. :-)
Your welcome :)
Great coat!! reminds me to open the large dovetailed dome trunk I got years ago with 30's 40's men's wool suits with button flys and a silk tuxado in it!!! Great highway signs on the fence!!!
More (if belated) THANKS to valentino97, TassieDevil, yougottahavestuff, and hunterqlee for your additional <love it>s!! YGHS, have you re-opened that trunk yet...?? ;-) :-)
Thanks for reminding me!!! Getting the ice cream shop ready for our 30th year opening. I'll try tomorrow. At least I'll take a pic of the dome top trunk!!!
