While my late Dad was awaiting the docking of the Hindenburg at Lakehurst, NJ, the Zeppelin caught fire and crashed. Rather than changing the oil of the 4 Daimler-Benz 1,200 hp Diesel engines (as part of the Tidewater Oil Company service team), Dad assisted the fireman in their unsuccessful efforts to extinguish the inferno. Having changed the oil on previous dockings, Dad knew some of the Hindenburg crew that perished.

I have been to the crash site at Lakehurst. It is an interesting phenomenon that the shape of the Hindenburg is still visible during Spring and Summer. The grass grows significantly greener where the dirigible crashed. This is due to the structure and aluminized dope that was used too build the craft. Much of it became an aluminum based fertilizer

My late father in law helped fight that fire. I still have his fireman's badge here along with his police badges. He didn't speak much about it and when he did he didn't elaborate on the subject.
