    Found this item along with some other tools and can't figure out what it is. The rod inserts into the handle.

      I've seen (and used) similar looking items for knocking/hammering hardened steel pins/nails into walls for hanging pictures.

      Hilti is the brand name I am familiar with.

      Looks like a pin punch with holding fixture to protect against smashed fingers.

      Those are two different tools. A punch (bottom) and a handle for a stone chisel (likely) meant to protect your hand from strikes. I say stone, because you're likely to miss a strike once you've chipped through, if you don't expect it.
