This is Nanny Still's design called "Vene" ("Boat") designed year 1953 and in production during the years 1954-1960. The glass is turned mold blown and opal glass.
I am posting this as an example of the fact that colors do matter. This same piece was made also in brown and green, and although the piece looks good in those colors, I feel these colors are the most striking and at least for me the best color combination.
Second point: To get these colors right is not easy and not only requires a brilliant designer but also a master glass blower. I don't know if the master glass blower in this case was Vilho Terhomaa, but most probably was as he was one of Nanny Still's favorite masters. Really, the designers are many times praised, but think: somebody had to blow and craft a masterpiece such as this. Imagine any one of us given a drawing of a design such as the one in these pictures and then told "please blow a glass like this" - this wouldn't work, right?
When I bough this, it was in total mint condition and priced accordingly, but where can you find this in these colors in mint condition?
Oh wow... gorgeous!
Beautiful, what a skill to be able to make this. It reminds me of a cowrie shell.
Sure do !!!
Amazing!!!
I saw a Vene for sale in Finland but it wasn't in great condition and the colour was plain boring... this one of yours is just amazing!
I some time heard there was this Russian glassblower that was hired bt Riihimäki because of her designs espececial requirements... what do you know about this?
I believe Vilho Terhomaa and his son Nikolai (also a glass blower) had family origins in Russia. Their name was Tereschatoff until the change to Terhomaa.
I's a beautiful bowl, and shows talent for design and glass work.
A glass blower recently told me that different colours of glass handle very differently and the heat one works best at may not suit another. He also said blue and yellow together was a difficult combination for that reason.
great object the colors are amazing learnt again something
