We found this item this weekend cleaning out my mother in laws house. Does anyone know how old it might be? What type it is?

The latches on the front were patented in 1873, I would say prior to 1880, greendog.

Leather covered barrel top trunk, wood slats on top running end to end was the style before 1880, less common after 1880, leather straps and buckles on the front were less common after the invention of metal latches in 1872, but some trunks still had them, without a makers label, hard to say who made it, greendog.

      Interesting. Thank you so much!

Hay no problem, do you plan on refinishing it?

We have no idea at this point. Just trying to empty the house to get it on the market. Have found a lot of unusual things that we are just setting aside for now. Not even sure we'd know where to start in terms of refinishing to be honest.
