Please help me identify this Chinese mark on this old silver bowl or pot? Can you help identify this type of pot also?

I have seen this type of pot advertised as a butter cooler, does that make any sense?

The mark in the photo needs to be turned 90 degrees to the right to be read properly. If they are silver you can find some information at this site. It has a basic intro to Chinese silver.
