I have looked this artist up online and have found works that were very similar in execution. Any information would be greatly appreciated. This painting is not signed but Martin Turner and his address in Chatham, Kent is written on the frame.

      Hi kmgboston,
I too have a painting by Martin Turner and have been trying to find out about him! The painting I have is very similar to your one but portrait, with a possible London street looking scene with red bus and black cab. It also has the name Martin Turner and a Kent address on the back, but my one is signed. After a bit of searching on the net, I came accross two other paintings which appear to have the same signature; one of which sold at auction some years ago and the other is in an art dealers gallery in America - we have corresponded and he claims to have known him! Perhaps we could share our findings?

      Hi Caroline,

I too tried to research our Martin Turner and I also corresponded with with
Luis Porretta and was very excited that he actually knew the artist. Unfortunately I have found little else about our Mr Turner. I came about owning my painting in a rather odd way. I had two friends, a gay couple here in Boston, who had a neighbor that was from England and she gave them the painting as payment for constructing some library shelves for her. They had the painting over their mantle and I had always admired it. Well they eventually split and the one who got the painting took an apartment on Beacon Hill and just prior to my wedding I was at his place to hand deliver his invitation and he presented me with the painting and I was overjoyed. Sadly he didn't come to the wedding and I hadn't seen him in a few years when I found out he had passed away at 44 years old.
If it would not be an imposition I would love to see a photo of your Martin Turner. My email address is kmgboston@yahoo.com.
Who knows, maybe one day artist Martin Turner may become highly collected.

Martin Turner RA, ROI, is a highly respected artist whose paintings are held in private collections around the world. He is featured in Debretts, "Who's Who I Art'. Prizewinner at the Royal Institute Of Oil Painters in London. Turner is a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy. Dave
    4. Luis Porretta, 14 years ago
I am the Luis Porretta mentioned above.

Martin Turner was a close personal friend for many years. He was undoubtedly a very gifted artist and was highly respected among his peers, but for reasons many of his admirers never quite understood flew under the artistic radar, despite winning numerous national and local prizes for his unique and often stunning paintings.

I suspect that the reason so few of his paintings surface in the auction market is that nobody wants to sell them! I own the painting with which Martin won the ROI prize mentioned above and which he kindly, as was his nature, gifted to me many years ago.

Martin died in tragic circumstances a few years ago, though he left behind and impressive body of work which one day will be given the respect that it is due. He was a national treasure.

      Hi Mr Porretta,
Perhaps bringing Martin Turner's talent and his struggle to have his art recognized for the true genius he possessed could be something you might be able to foster in the art community. I'm sure as you were a friend of his you would also know where other examples of his art are located and thus given your connection to the world of fine art you may be able to interest a museum either in the UK or on our side of the pond to finally give this talented man his just recognition. I myself would be happy to LOAN my Martin Turner for an exhibition.
    6. Nigel Nutting, 14 years ago
I bought one of his paintings at an auction last year--a snow scene in Chatham Kent called 'Chatham X'. It's about 4ft by 3ft and dominates a wall in my house. It's signed and also has his address on the back. Visitors always comment on it ( you can't miss it) and I like it very much.

This is all really interesting. I bought a Martin Turner winter scene of a valley in Kent at Deptford market for £5 this morning. I saw that it was last sold at the Mall Galleries in 1980 for £45.
      It is a beautiful thing.
    9. Steve Clarke, 13 years ago
Hi all, I too am a proud owner of a Martin Turner London scene, (Mayfair I think).
I visited an exhibition at the South Bank in the early eighties and immediately wanted to buy the exhibited painting which was unfortunately already sold. I made enquires and was given Martin's London address (off Baker St) and eventually made contact. Typically, he invited me to his apartment to take my choice of scores of paintings. It was a privilege to meet Martin and my painting still takes pride of place.
    10. Chris Stuttle, 13 years ago
Hello, I too am lucky enough to have a large snow scene with commuters either going or coming from work, is it possible to get pictures of his other works ?
    11. chris stuttle, 13 years ago
I have corresponded with a couple of people who have a painting by Martin Turner and appear to be equally moved by the work and motivated to find out more about this man. I would like to set up an address on the web so that people can upload their picture and view his other works, just that and nothing more. If you can submit a good quality picture please send it to me at chrisstuttle@btinternet.com. I'm more than happy to correspond with anybody or receive help from anybody who can make this a reality.

Martin & I first met in Devon whilst on holiday with our parents in the 1950's. We were both only children and our parents kept in touch, for many years. His father was a true gentleman and Martin was the same. We visited them in Kent where Martin was then into making & flying model airplanes. Later, when he had his scooter, we would ride around the Kent country lanes, carefree & helmet less. Martin went to art school and also learnt to drive. He had not had his car long when he was involved in an accident; his foot was crushed between the pedals and never fully healed, permanently leaving him with mobility problems. In 1977 I was in London & offered to sell his pictures at Bayswater Road on a Sunday. The paintings sold well and have gone to all parts of the world. He exhibited at the Summer Exhibition and won awards at the Mall Galleries, one of which I collected on his behalf from Princess Anne.
Martin was such a great painter and deserves recognition. I have arranged for a tree to be planted in the Jubilee Woods and the dedication recorded in the Royal Record (hopefully!) The dedication from Luis Porretta reads; This tree is dedicated to the extraordinary and timeless painter, Martin Turner, ROI, whose gentle nature touched all who knew him.

I will post the details of the tree & its location when I have them.

    13. neraida, 12 years ago
please if you can tell me when and where the tree will be based.I was Martins student for a year and a half .He was my best friend and the best teacher i ever had .His studio was based in russell square where i used to go .He was a Great artist and a Great person he used to love me like his own daughter .His death and the way he died hurted me so much even to this day.I went to his funeral in Kent and he had more friends than family.I hope he is happy where he is with his wife Dorothy.
    14. JohnM JohnM, 12 years ago
This is all so very interesting as I too have a beautiful piece by Martin Turner, and am told it is a scene of the rear of his house in Kent by a friend who knew Martin Turner and who kindly gave us this piece over three years ago. It measures approximately 32" by 43" and is largely black, white and grey in (I think) pastel. I would love to know if there is a catalogue or collection of his work anywhere...
    15. alkylam alkylam, 12 years ago
I bought a Chatham winter scene in 1980 from I thought Martin himself but maybe on reading Bayswater comments above it was from him. As it was at the Sunday market held along the railings on the Bayswater Road. It's signed Martin Turner 80 and is about 34 ins x 30ins.
    16. whitsunweddings, 12 years ago
Hello, just an update for those interested I have now accumulated 15 images of Martin Turner pictures and am putting a web site together to show them. Again this will take at least 6 months and not all the images are great, but it's a start. I will post here when it's up.
    17. jumbledog, 12 years ago
I've only just discovered this website. Delighted to find other Martin Turner collectors out there. My wife and I bought three of his London paintings in about 1983 from Martin himself when he was exhibiting on the Hyde Park railings. Two are on our walls, one features a rainy road junction in Pimlico, with no vehicles or people; the other is of Great Russell Street looking east, with the wall/railings of the British Museum on the left, features a black cab with its lights on, just as the one in Piccadilly Circus above. The third, which we couldn't place, also featured a black cab with its lights on. We gave that to an American relative who now lives in Manhattan.
    18. Occasionallyarty, 12 years ago
Told by friend of friend about this website. I have two Turners bought in the eighties and have given several away as presents. I was turned on to Martin's pictures by the artist Richard Price, who still exhibits on the Bayswater Road and has done for, I would guess, over thirty years. I love the pictures and receive many comments about them. I believe they now sell for more realistic prices but don't know of any owners who would wish to part with them.
    19. whitsunweddings, 12 years ago
Hello Jumbledog and Occasionallyarty if you think it important can you get in touch with me at chrisstuttle@btinternet.com (entry 11. above) ........ I'm trying to catalogue his works, I've got three myself and pictures of some twenty more ..... the aim is to construct a web site ...... which is about 50% complete.

So, the above mentioned Winterscape screenprint just sold on Ebay...were some of us bidding against each other I wonder?..
    22. jumbledog, 12 years ago
Well, it wasn't me as I didn't pick up Bayswater's alert in time.
    23. pottersgirl44, 11 years ago
I have a watercolour 'Winterscapes with Steps' with Martin Turner's address and telephone number on the back and two bigger pictures.
    24. JohnM JohnM, 11 years ago
Hi Pottersgirl44,...any chance of you posting some pics as it would be great to see them?
    25. RRadford, 11 years ago
I have roughly 20 of Martins works, mainly small ones, along with his (ROIPIWC) The Graphic Prize medal with his name on and dated 1977, also quite a few photos he had taken mostly in either Devon/Cornwall.
His mother gave them to me for helping to move her from the family home in Rainham Kent to an old peoples home in Rainham Kent. I liked them so much I kept them, although I have not looked at them for years now, I must take another look. I was sorry to here Martin had passed away
    26. whitsunweddings, 11 years ago
Hello ... Just an update, I have now some 60 images of his pictures, it seems he was prolific during certain periods, I have definite periods with different styles picked out and have roughed together a site and reserved a name, it's all on-going, always any pictures, anecdotes or anything to try and build a picture of this extraordinary mans life would be appreciated. I'm mindful that time is pressing and I think to lose the thread here is really missing out on something that will only become more important as time marches on. I anticipate getting my act together by the end of this year. If you have anything of interest or would like a catalogue of his works as I have managed to build up, just get in touch at 11. above.
    27. RRadford, 11 years ago
I have been in contact with Chris 11th post above about documenting some of what I have of Martins (and it's a lot) If anyone else is interested email me on rr.radford@blueyonder.co.uk

I have read the posts with interest, his art says he was a nice chap and its no surprise he flew model planes and lived happily in Kent. I have two Martin Turner's, one of Kendall Street bought off the railings of Bayswater Road in about 1982 and another of a London taxi with St Paul's behind bought about 1988 from a gallery. Both quite large and of course are in water colour and with that trademark rainy ambiance. I think if these are not worth big money those that value style and quality just don't get it, mind you I think they are worth even more to me, I just relate to them both. It would be good to have a complete record of his art as one day the worth will be recognized and there will be a galley dedicated to his work.
    29. PaulDavies, 7 years ago
Martin was a great artist and it's good to see that he remains so highly appreciated. I have a conte crayon picture of Martin's, Wintertown lll, which I bought at the Royal Academy 1987 Summer Exhibition. It's a large painting (over 170 cms wide), painted in the characteristic style of the other images posted on this site - a really powerful piece. Sadly, we're downsizing so I need to sell and would love the picture to find a good home! Please contact me at pauldavies@btinternet.com if any interest. M thanks - Paul

I have been trying to track down the unknown artist of a few paintings myself and a friend bought from the railings on Bayswater Road, back in (I think)
    31. Lornafallace, 6 years ago
Oops - accidentally submitted previous comment without finishing it! To continue .... in approx 1993.

I managed to find my way to this site via a reverse-search in Google so thank you all for solving the mystery! The paintings are signed but it isn't legible, however the style looks like others by Martin and I believe the Bayswater railings link can't be a coincidence. :-)

Very happy to share photos of the two I have if any one wants to see them - both London street scenes - one of which I think is Regents Street.

It's taken a bit of time I'm afraid, but I have finally got the time now to concentrate on some important unfinished projects in my life and this has always been close to top of the list. I have started a blog, the idea is to run a set of posts detailing what I have managed to find out about Martin Turner over the years that I had been looking.
    33. kwqd kwqd, 5 years ago
Many collectors have their "Martin Turner". Mine are Kenneth Kilstrom and W. Stewart (probably a pseudonym of Frederick James Aldridge). I have web sites devoted to both, created a Wikipedia page for Kilstrom and biographies for them on several art web sites. Interesting how some artists strike a chord with us and we go out of our way to preserve their memory if they are otherwise obscure. Many fine artists who had some level of recognition during their life times are soon forgotten after they pass on. Kudos for working to preserve the memory of Martin Turner!
    34. norodnik, 4 years ago
      @drchrisstuttle,

looking back through my email it seems we did converse briefly in Sept 2014 regarding a couple of Martin Turner painitngs I own (time flies!!). I think at the time you were looking to build a website to display info and pictures from people who had his work in their possesion. Let me know if you still want pictures (of the paintings) and I'd be interested in your blog/website when running.
    35. Eshelby_nc, 4 years ago
I have a painting titled ‘London in a drizzle’, it is signed but you have to look carefully as it is faint. It does have a very clear 97 and I wonder if anyone else has a number on theirs. I reckon this was around the year we probably bought it but not sure if it is the year or not. Appreciate comments. Thanks
    36. AdamH, 3 years ago
Hello All, I am very late in discovering this thread. I too own a Martin Turner painting: "London In The Drizzle", water colour, signed and dated '88 (1988). I think it is of the Oxford St end of Regent Street.

I recently moved it to a new location in my house and it prompted me to have a search again on the web for information as last time I looked I could not find any info on Martin, I was amazed when I saw this thread and have enjoyed reading all the posts and shared enthusiasm for Martin's work. I wish I had had the chance to meet him like some of you. I'll be really interested if drchrisstuttle has managed to create the website.

Regarding my painting. I was on a wait list for one of his paintings at a local gallery to me in Berkshire UK, that occasionally dealt with his work (they ceased trading 10 years ago). I waited 5 years and got a call out of the blue one day saying they had one painting available he had found in his house that he had done some years previously and as he was not too well they doubted he would do any more new works for them. I had 30 minutes to view and buy or the next person on the list would get a call. I bought on the spot and not regretted it since.

My painting also came with Martin's biography 1940 -1996 which is still attached to the back where I stuck it after I had had it framed.

Happy to share photos and the bio if anyone is interested

      Hi, AdamH. :-)

Please do post. Every time this particular post comes back to the first page here at Collectors Weekly Show & Tell, I'm slightly hypnotized by this painting.

I've idly wondered what street(s) this painting depicts, and it seems to have been too easy and famous: Picadilly Circus.

The reason I didn't recognize it immediately is (1) I'm not British, let alone a Londoner (2) it's not the typical view of Piccadilly Circus which tends to make the corner building between Shaftesbury Avenue and Glasshouse Street with all the advertising on it the focus.

Rather, it's from the vantage point of somebody standing next to Shaftesbury Avenue between Great Windmill Street and Coventry Street looking across Piccadilly Circus towards the building that used to house the Swan & Edgar department store:

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swan_%26_Edgar#/media/File:Building_on_corner_of_Regent_Street_and_Piccadilly,_London_W1_-_geograph.org.uk_-_993237.jpg

This is about as close as I could match it:

      Piccadilly Circus
      London, UK

      https://goo.gl/maps/L3EexpKKka6GByk7A

The painting probably depicts Piccadilly Circus as it looked some time between 1988 and 2006, because Sanyo had illuminated advertising there between 1978 and 2011.

However, in 1978, the Sanyo signage was blue:

      https://www.flickr.com/photos/mcwidi_2/46055162152

By 1988, it was changed out for red neon:

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Piccadilly_circus_1992_07.jpg

The red Sanyo sign was there until 2011, but sadly, Martin Turner was no more. He apparently died in 2006 (see artuk dot org link above).

You can just see the red "NYO" in the painting.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piccadilly_Circus

I don't know about anybody else, but I feel better now. };-)
    40. keramikos, 3 years ago
D'oh! If I could only read. CW user jumbledog IDed it as Piccadilly Circus years ago.

Oh well, I wouldn't have had nearly as much fun of researching it.

Hello fellow Martin Turner collectors! I am absolutely thrilled that my inquiry 11 years ago has brought all the interest it has. I love my Martin Turner painting it has such great memories for me. It was a wedding gift from a friend Jim Holmes, who has since passed. Jim lived on Beacon street in Boston, USA. His neighbor in the building hired Jim to construct custom book shelves. When completed he would only take the cost of materials. The woman who hired him while delighted with the shelves she felt it wasn't enough. The woman was a transplant from London and she gave Jim the painting, he said he saw it and could not refuse the gift. My marriage was in July, 2004. Jim was invited but was ill and could not attend. A week after the nuptials he called me and my husband and asked us to stop by. He presented us with our Martin Turner. I know many of you feel the same as I do, because I could never part with it but it is encouraging to see so much interest in his work and his life.
    42. keramikos, 3 years ago
      Hello backatcha, kmgboston. :-)

Thank you for your renewed interest in this post, and your touching back story on your acquisition of the painting. I can well understand why you could never part with it, and it's not just that it's a great-looking piece of art.

This has been one of my rabbit hole adventures. If I'd read all of the older commentary more carefully before starting my own research, I would have learned early on that the location was Piccadilly Circus. However, then I might not have dug quite so deeply.

I might have looked at the current Google Street View of Piccadilly Circus, spun it around 360 degrees, said, "Yup, that it, all right" and been done with it.

However, because I didn't know, I compiled a list of London traffic circles, and started looking at them. Then once the 40 watt incandescent light bulb came on in my brain pan, and I realized it was Piccadilly Circus, I still wanted more information, and kept digging.

It does seem that the vintage is 1988-2006. Now I'm wondering what time of day it was.

The sky is grey, which is understandable, because it's raining, but the streetlights are on. Is it perhaps dawn or dusk? I'd go with dusk, because of the number of pedestrians on scene. Also, some of the upper story interior lights in the Swan & Edgar building look like they're illuminated.

But one curious thing is that the Sanyo sign doesn't seem like it's illuminated. Was that artistic license, or hadn't it kicked on yet, because it was still early dusk?

There's just something about this particular painting that mesmerizes me. It may be the way the artist handled the reflection on the pavement.

I hope that AdamH follows through, and creates a post with his own Martin Turner painting and Turner bio.

I tried looking for Chris Stuttle's Martin Turner blog, but no joy yet. I suppose I could try that email address.

Anyway, thank you again, especially for your indulgence of my ramblings.

Hello ...... Regarding Blog Post I mentioned some time ago (9 years I think) ........ it's 90% done ........ I'm going to visit it again tonight and hopefully post the link as it is - uncompleted and for me that is difficult ........ BUT ..... so long as you know it's not completed ...... I would love to have any corrections/musings or anecdotes plus of course good quality images for it if you can ..... the Blog is sparse and you will see is broken into phases ...... the hardest thing for me personally has been to ask myself if I actually have the moral right to write about somebody who some here new personally and I did not ..... only through conversations with those who did and of course his pictures ....... but time marches on ...... so if you can understand and accept that this Blog is "my take" on what I know and what I managed to find out ...... then we should be good to go.

Here's a link to the CW 'Help & FAQs' (down at the very bottom of page, highlighted in blue)

      https://www.collectorsweekly.com/answer-desk

It has a section on 'Show & Tell' - which, I hope, will guide you through starting a new post, and starring your uploaded pictures of a picture! I don't think it's possible to upload a pic in the middle of someone else's post, unless it's a direct link. Hope this helps.

      drchrisstuttle, Woo hoo!

No problem with any imperfections on your website/blog.

Hi ...... apologies for the delay .... as mentioned above, it's not complete but this is my take on what I discovered in my search for the man that painted a still, to me, very beguiling picture ..... I welcome any comments or feedback. The site is a blog and you should be able to access it at : http://martinturnerart.wordpress.com

Lornafallace, Yes, what Gillian says is quite true: you can't upload images to somebody else's post here at CW S&T.

You can either add put a link to images that you have hosted elsewhere in a comment in somebody else's post, or create posts of your own with up to four images apiece.

Here is a bit more help on posts. Sorry, it was written with a Windows desktop user in mind, because that's the only thing I use when I add content to CW S&T:

Bravo drchrisstuttle ! What a superb website you have created about Martin and his life and works. Well worth the wait (although I am very late in discovering this thread) I was both moved and fascinated at the same time. I like the way you have constructed the narrative I feel I am getting to know the man and what he was about and very disturbed like you about the similarities with Van Gogh's end of days, very moving and sad.

Can we contribute images of our various works for you to include on it? I am conscious of the amount of work you have already put in so if there is a way we can add ourselves ?

Once again drchrisstuttle brilliant and thankyou !

Thank you drchrisstuttle! Great job. So interesting and some lovely observations.
Would love to share pic of my treasured work by Martin - how can I best do this? It is a large black and white painting of the rear of his house in Rainham, Kent.

I thought I might go into town and see if I can find the sites of the London paintings. Maybe take photos from the same view points and share with you all to see how things have changed ... or not. Just for fun you understand and, certainly not for a few months as right now it is both cold and a tad short on daylight hours. Fear not, the English weather being what it is means there is a high chance of getting the full "drizzle" experience at any time of year. :-)

It would be great to see everyones' London paintings so I have a good list of sites to discover!

      Lornafallace, That's a great idea. :-)

Sure, there's Google Street View, but sometimes it's difficult to reproduce the exact vantage point using that.

Yeah, I'd wait a bit for the weather to improve if I were you. I myself was out and about already today of necessity, and it wasn't pleasant. >8-0

The first step, of course, is to identify the locations.

      Hi, JohnM. :-)

I took a look at your profile, and you've already created a post with a Martin Turner creation:

      https://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/70498-martin-turner-piece

So it's been sitting out there all this time (years). >8-0

drchrisstuttle, Your blog looks great. :-)

There are a few typographical errors here and there, but if there is one thing I think you might want to adjust, it would be that large self-portrait of Turner that's more or less at the top.

It looks fine on my Windows hybrid, but it overwhelms my Android display.

Can anybody with an iPhone report on what it looks like in that environment? As a matter of fact, can anybody with an iPad, Linux device, etc., report on what it looks like?

Hi Lornafallace, sounds like a great idea for spring :-), I'll post a picture of my painting and Martin Turner bio once I hear from drchrisstuttle on the question I posted about how he wants to catalogue the images on his blog as I guess its a lot of work..

Hello Keramikos ...... thanks a lot and also to Gillian, Adam and John who commented on the blog ...... yes for sure if you can take a good quality image of your Martin Turner and e-mail it to the contact on the Blog ..... perhaps with you in it !!!! then I can easily see a "My Martin Turner Blog" page with perhaps a comment on how you picked it up and what it is about the picture that fascinates you ........ then we could work on that ..... I did I'm pretty sure register a domain name some time ago ...... I have probably about seventy pictures ...... but but ...... as you will be aware ..... taking a photo of a picture, especially if it's behind glass is difficult at best ..... but give it a go !!! I've got a pretty good handle on the chronology of the paintings, it's a massive arc and it repeats itself ....... hmmmm ....... yes their are for sure typos in the blog and I will take out my personal view of what I think ...... so to try and be a bit more subjective ...... but for sure their are a lot of people like us out their !!!!! More on this in a couple of weeks I'm sure. Look after yourself

PS I've nailed about a dozen of the city locations for his easel and have some snaps of those I've taken just trying to work out the perspectives ....... it's quite a lot of fun !!!!

      Hi again, drchrisstuttle. :-)

I checked again today, and now your Martin Turner blog looks great on both my Windows and Android devices, so thank you for whatever you did to adjust the Turner self-portrait.

It sounds like your Martin Turner project is really coming along, if you've identified about a dozen of the locations for the seventy Martin Turner works you have.

I don't know if you've looked at them, but would you care to opine on the location of Lornafallace's two Martin Turner paintings (they were done 1992 and 1991)?:

I have been collecting art since childhood , and have now gathered a large collection. I met Martin many years ago alongside the north side of Hyde Park ; this was a location for artists to display their works ; quite a number went on to be highly collectible . I bought quite a number of Martin’s works in the late 70’s and early 80’s and still have them still today .some he painted in a series over a period of time ; one of which series I own. I have always cherished them even though I collected more important well known artists later in my life when funds were more abundant . Being half American , I had many American friends who visited London and I introduced to the artists I liked the most along the railings in Hyde Park ; most of them took something away back to the USA . I too think Martins works are undervalued. He was a very lovely man and not pushy ; maybe that’s why he did not hit the top mark during his life. Continue to enjoy your paintings folks ????

      Hi, Warrenuk. :-)
