This is an 1850s NINTH plate ambrotype a few interesting details.
The ambrotype was nicely tinted and shows both yellow and red in the detailed pattern of the blanket or throw. Mom has tried to hide behind her baby, but the bottom half of her face can be clearly seen even with the matting.
Outside of the matting, I discovered old paper seals holding the photograph and cover glass together and probably preserving most of the pristine tinting.
This type of image falls into the intensely collected "hidden mother" genre.
With some minimal effort reasonable examples of this genre can be found at bargain prices.

Just lovely, scottvez! And unusual, too. Very nice piece.
I bet there are more “hidden mothers” than we know about - if they manage to be completely out of sight. I love the whole theme. I never had formal photos taken of my kids - some things never change. : )
Thanks for looking tique. Agree-- probably most baby/ toddler images had mom somewhere nearby.
Some of the best are where mom is hidden under a cloth and looks almost like a ghost holding the baby.
