This is my fruit bat. I found him at an antiques mall in Millerton. I am hoping he wasn't killed just to be preserved but perhaps died a natural death. Anyway, I fell in love with him immediately and purchased him. He is in my office, where else but hanging upside down. I call him Vlad or The Count. You can see the beauty of his form, especially his wings, which are absolute marvels.

Vlad is absolutely wonderful!!! These are fascinating creatures. I never knew much about them until I saw them on the Planet Earth series. Most excellent find Laura!!

What a perfect name! You certainly have a talent for naming things and creatures.

Thank you for the love, John, Jenni, Scott, Anna, and Ken.

Jenni, that is the perfect description for him!

Scott, aren't they amazing? I find their ability to use echolocation fascinating.

Thank you so much, Anna. I figured Dracula...bats...although he's not a vampire bat. I find the name Vlad to be the perfect fit with the juxtaposition of his cuteness with the fact that he's a bat.

Ken, I don't think it would be enjoyable chasing a bat with a laundry basket. I am glad you got him safely out, and, most importantly, that you were all right. (I hope!) No one wants to be bitten by a bat, even if it is a fruit bat. Now I have the heebie jeebies. I do sometimes shiver if I'm lying on the deck in the summer months right at twilight and they're fluttering around high above me.

Thank you for the love, Zippo. I don't think I would even consider trying bat, and I eat most foods. Thank you for the love, T. and Izenglish.

I used to catch them in the basement of our Gov't building and later release them outside. They were also in the lobby, hanging upside down and 2nd 4th and 6th floors. I loved them though they were as frightened as anyone else. I love being on the elevator and freaking out some of the passengers when the box started to move. Public Works later got rid of them all. I believe they were also released outside.

Thank you for the love, Phil and Karen.

Phil, how did what seem to be quite a few bats get inside the building?
