Collecting this style of trunk is not my favorite but being 41" long it is out of the norm thus its in my collection. This I personally feel will make for a better proportioned coffee table with a long couch. A 36" as I have used at other homes seemed to always be to small for my liking as they usually have a center piece and very quickly becomes cluttered. This one however in its simplistic format still has from a restoration angle many little details to add some punch. The small metal detail under the slat clamp for a color division. The multitude of strap tie down pieces to pull in more of the chosen warm leather color. The simulated canvas metal foundation for a much cleaner and crisper body paint color. The art deco looking detailed set of four back hinges verses plain is nice. And last the subtle die cast detailed two leg slat edge clamps which are framed by the four subtle floral motif corners. Sounds like I am describing a meal.. From a collectible stand point... it is still 41" long thus a little different. Comes with both original trays which certainly saves time making them or buying them and just nice to get. Overall condition for the age is very descent as it's not rusted to death and still retains the Duluth identification tag/label. There is an inscription I guess from the owner written in pencil or pen. Mrs. Elizabeth Pierce Duluth April 1st 1901, which by the way marked the last year of the Victorian era with the death of Queen Victoria in this same year.
jscott0363 has a stunning 42 inch restored on his page.... https://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/141435-my-big-brown-flat-top-trunk .... it can be difficult
at first glance from a photo to distiguish a 36" from a 41/42" without a comparison beside it but once you know the size is 6" bigger you can certainly see it.
This will make a great coffee table, no disrespect but like I said, for me, most flat tops are dull and boring to me, not all, but most. The ornate round/barrel tops have much more character for me personally, but still a very nice trunk, greendog.
You could put a round top on top of it. It is another with a nice interior.
