This 1870's 36" by 32 tall, Canvas Fancy Nail Barrel Stave Trunk has over 2000 nails, original leather handles, Brass eagle lock Patent Date 1864 and 1875. It has a real mixture of all textures for hardware and metal work. For example, the lid valance is canvas wrapped, it has brass corner shoulders, a mixture of regular size nails in the nail work and petite size nails as well. It also has a canvas underside bottom which I am sure reflects the true color of the top at one time. Has extra long metal slat end caps under the flat plain slat clamps with four back hinges. Still remnants of the brass tinning on some of the other slat clamps , nails, and handle cleats, so all the metal work, original look, would have had an overall brass on black and canvas.
The interior is poor but was linen lined originally, no tray, but some hardware remnants on the lid remain. I am not sure why I don't have an over all interior shot in my files. All in all a little different for sure and some definite thought to be had in this restoration.

Love it , #4 latches on the front patented in 1878, probably closer to 1880 than you think, but like Scotty said WOW!, greendog.

Ya. pretty rare trunk you don't see that level of nail work that often. combine that with that red stripped canvas, and the leather over the valance. Some thoughts: I have seen a few of these over the years, I believe that the 1872 Vuitton striped canvas might have been it's inspiration. As some American makers claimed to produce a "French "trunk" due to it's popularity. The French did tended to cover the metal valance with leather .

What is throwing me off is the style of the hinge which could be slightly later than 1870's I will search for the exact patent on that hinge hardware but these below are similar and may apply to your trunk, not sure.

Parts of this patent could possibly apply.

Thanks so much Drill for taking the time with your input and the much enjoyed patent data. I did end up researching Louis V. when I acquired this one simply by punching in stripped canvas trunks..Thought I had a real winner there for about four minutes..lol Thanks again! As well for the love! I will let the trunk know..they always like to here it, they start a little vibration and click there clasps open and closed!! Its kind of creepy but as long as they enjoy it... I guess I can live with it.
