this is a Doctor's Lady. They were used in the Oriental communities of early America like San Francisco, Philadelphia, and New York. as well as communities in Japan, and China.
Oriental women patients would never allow a man, other than her husband, to touch them anywhere on their body. As well, the husbands would not allow it either.
If an Oriental woman patient went to the Doctor for treatment of a pain or discomfort, she used the Doctor's lady and the accompanying pointer to show the Doctor where it hurt and he would have to treat her as best as he could with the information that the "Doctor's Lady" would provide.
They were often made from ivory or jade (mine is a less expensive material)and are highly collectable.
