This item was originally A German 3 mark coin dated 1925 commemorating the 1000th anniversary of the Rheinland, type of KM-46. Coincidentally 1925 was also the year that French occupation troops ended their occupation of the Rheinland. The reverse of the coin was machined off and engraved in German longhand style “Gew. v. Max Graf Amtsvorsteher 1932-33”. This translates as Awarded by Max Graf Administrator. Max Graf was the leading Austrian music critic of the time as well as an important figure in the field of psychoanalysis were he was associated for a time with Dr. Sigmund Freud. He was born in 1873 in Vienna and died in 1958. He was a Professor at the academy of Music and the Arts in Vienna 1902- 1914. Due to the Austrian Anschluss he left Vienna for New York in 1938 and returned in 1947. Why he converted this coin into an award or prize is unknown to me. His picture and information is on line in “Wikipedia”.
