I found this small plate at Goodwill tonight. i'm about 99% sure that this is made by Monterey Jade and you can see that there are some indentations on the bottom, but i can't read it because the glazes are so thick over them. Has anyone seen Monterey Jade pieces in a blue jade color before? i haven't.

I think that you're correct Pete, it looks like Monterey Jade to me too. The Pottery that makes the Whale Tail mugs, has a similar glaze though, so I'm not positive. A lot of times the glaze on Monterey Jade, is thick on the bottom and covers their mark, like your piece is. Sometimes in bright sunlight, I've been able to see a number, or a partial name. Good luck, a very nice find though! :^)

It could be the Whale Tail Pottery maker Doug Wylie, Pete! Here's a link to a google image search:

The glaze is the same! :^)

Here's a casserole by Doug Wylie on ebay that looks like the same glaze as your piece Pete!

Doug Wylie was raised in Monterey area(Monterey Jade, look?), and has a studio in the Sacramento area! I hope this helps! :^)

thank you Bill! i wasn't familiar w/ his work before. but i'm pretty certain that this plate is different and more like the real monterey jade pottery. i didn't know that it came in the bluer hues before but i just found several of them online and they match much better. wyllie's glaze seems to be thinner - not as thick as the monterey jade pieces and they are much glossier as well. this piece is more matte. thanks again bill!
