I just picked this find up, I collect old trunks. But when I saw this I immediately thought it may be a Vanderman Strong box.
It is a steel box inner frame, with wood and exterior. 32" X 18" X 18"
Does not have the Vanderman plaque on the front but same design and demensions
Interesting... certainly looks like a vanderman trunk... I have one in my collection. This one is missing their hallmark locking corner hardware and their unique design handles. The tapered end to the wood slats are also different. These subtle differences would lead me to surmise that this is not made by vanderman but perhaps a rival maker during same period... unless vanderman had two very different lines of trunks. Also they would have put there name plate under the front latch... look for four screw holes to see if it’s simply been taken off. This is a beautiful strong box in any case.
Wow, very nice!
I agree with trunkman, I don't think it's a Vanderman, could be a custom made strong box, doesn't appear to have been used and abused much, maybe it was a payroll box back in the 20's 30's or 40's just a guess, I like it, it's very cool, greendog.
It’s strange. Because it looks a lot like ones I’ve seen online. But maybe a competitor ???????
It is so well made I don’t think its a one of custom. The steel body box is in great shape. The sticker on it is from an old power company and the owner thought it was used for a toolbox.
It definitely has the form and shape of a vanderman trunk, however the details in comparison would suggest otherwise... most likely as you say made by a competitor... and they were most often used as tool boxes.
