This 2 1-4" pair of plume-headed birds is in pretty good condition considering it is from the 40s when Coro (1901-1979) made their Duettes line, which could be worn as one brooch, or detached to make 2 fur or dress clips. The piece is goldtone with faceted aqua marquise stones as their tummies, tiny white rhinestone accents & sparkly aqua eyes (stones somewhat yellowed with age). Signed Coro des pat pend in script, also Coro Duettes on detachable back brace. Patent number 151,151 by Adolph Katz for Coro (1901-1998) in 1948 & called "love birds"

What a cool idea, new to me!
      Love the boidies too.

Lovely! I’ve never seen pieces that can either be worn as brooches or dress/fur clips!

Thanx Karen, glad to introduce you to the Duettes - I only just found out about this type myself recently when someone else here on CW posted her pair of owls, so I shopped around & found these pretty "boids" lol. I was going to call them exotic birds or birds of paradise, when I came across the actual item in a book & they were named love birds - of course we bird "experts" know real lovebirds are smaller & look different. Great comment, Thanks!

You know Ken, the Duettes are pretty expensive, and if not they can be pretty shabby looking because of their age - I particularly noticed this with the enamel types. They are outdated of course, but I do like their concept - appreciate the great compliment

Laura, isn't this a fabulous idea, a convertible jewelry piece - we have that sort of thing today, but Coro was innovative with it. Fur and dress clips must have been the rage back then, and it's nice this item could be converted into two of them - and the brooch, the brace could be removed & you'd just have to hide that long clasp if wearing one bird (more convenient to wear them together) Thanx for the great compliment & observation

Very grateful for all your loves

Love birds were so popular during the fifties and they made many items featuring them, my fave were the lovebirds blue mirrors !~
    7. Newfld Newfld, 7 years ago
Thanx so much for the great words Phil, now I'm curious and have to check out the blue mirror lovebirds - I only wonder why Coro and other designers made these birds more exotic looking than the real ones, which are smaller and have flat heads

You're so kind everybody, the luv is greatly appreciated

We are both bird lovers Mary, we both had parakeets, and I even used to feed the wild birds in birdhouses for awhile - love all birdie images. Glad you enjoyed these Coro Duettes, they are still out there but pretty expensive, I got a pretty good deal on this one less than a hundred (it's ridiculous the prices they charge today for older jewelry, I never buy the crazy priced stuff) I'm sure someday you will find one at a decent price, it just takes patience & luck

Thank you Mary and KKK for the great kind loves as always, they are most appreciated

I don't know how I missed this and your gorgeous cats Jenni, I possibly missed a couple of days even!!
I love these duettes! I still haven't got one though:-)

Judy thanks as always for your kind words, I'm really glad you liked these "oldies", they are simpler yet somewhat sweeter than newer types of interchangeable jewelry. Of course I adore anything birdie as you know. And no worries about loves/comments, I know you're always in my corner & have been since my early posts, thank you so much for being my friend!

These really caught my eye. The turquoise gets me every time, as well as being dress etc., clips. I had no idea how high the Coro prices had reached until I had a look a little while ago. and you would seem to have 'a book piece'! So - kudos Newfld, lovely love birds.

(I sometimes use a clip earring, clipped to my dress/sweater etc., also use a pierced earring as a brooch, if it wont cause any damage to the clothing).

Great comments & compliments Gillian, thank you so much for the kind words. You're right this one is a book piece, after getting it I acquired a pretty good book by J. Carroll (she did three, mine is Cost.Jwlry 202) which had these love birds with red tummies, and I've also seen them in white, but like you I love it in aqua. Great that you can wear creative dress clips, they sound lovely

These certainly are more idealized than many. I think the blue mirror had pointed tufts on their head !~

Thank you Phil for your super observant comment on this pair of tufted birds, they certainly are idealized fantasy birdies
