Great Grandad Alf Telford's steamer trunk. Guessing made/used from late 1800s to early 1900s. "Modern Trunks" label in lid. "Star Lock Works, Philadelphia" on central clasp. 22 inches × 41 inches. 12 inches deep. Canvas covered top and sides. Metal skin on base. Would love information about manufacturer!

Steamer trunk, this one made late 1890's to early 1900's, most people refer to all trunks as steamer trunks, not so, this is a true steamer trunk because of its size, steamer trunks varied in size a little but usually no taller than 14 inches so they could fit under the beds/bunks in the steamer ships rooms, as space was limited, "hence the name steamer trunk" all other trunks, round or flat top are simply, travel trunks, greendog.

Like the hardware! Another narrow slat trunk maker label...cool!

Thanks Greendog and I'm4AnythingOld - for clarifying we do have a genuine "steamer trunk" and for nice feedback! I will have to keep digging to find out more about Modern Trunks the manufacturer...

Your welcome, I personally don't know much about Modern trunk co. If anyone knows about them, it will be Jim Cardoza at HMS antique trunks or Marvin Miller at This old trunk, greendog.

What is the D in the title for? Leather bound, canvas covered Steamer/Cabin trunk. (Both names were used) Unfortunately, I don't have any info on this maker. This is not uncommon as there were many makers.

Wondering if it could be one of the many(expired) trademarks of R&H Macy.As the company produced in house many household items.

I not sure Macy's made much of anything as they were a re seller of other companies products. I have seen many trunks with the Macy label on them, and the actual makers label as well. I did find one reference to Modern here,
