Found this old tool in my grandfather's garage. Very similar to a miner's pick axe or a masonry tool. What has stumped is that on one end it has a hammer like tip with the brand or mark "R8" stamped into it. Looks like it would leave the symbol "R8" if it struck certain materials or was heated like a branding iron. Or maybe just a maker's mark? Anyone know?
It looks like a "log marking" hammer to identify ownership of logs shipped by water from woods to mill
I believe you have a hammer made for making swage blocks.

The design is totally wrong for slate work. It might well be a log marker as Motoolz suggested but I never saw a marker this light weight. I suggested swage blocks because in less hardened materials like lead or wood it would work.
