I have been studying West Indian wildlife for 45 yrs. & thought I would share some of my finds. Of course the iguana is numerous & often seen. During mating season, they have a bad habit of crossing roads without regard to traffic. When this occurs, we call them "speed bumps". Our indigenous species is as ugly as they come. A pretty green S. Amer. species has been moving in and now considered a threat to our ugly ones. Naturalists are upset, but I can't understand why trading ugly for pretty is bad. That's why there are divorces.
Here is a rare pic. of iguanas mating while a horse watches or waits in line.
Then we have our donkeys. They did wander freely in SXM until it was realized that they made too big of speed bumps & they are mostly seen in pastures now. Nobody seems to know what they are good for here. On small islands, they are used to carry things like fat people.
Then, there is another category of wildlife. They come in a variety of colours and can be seen having "five-sies" anytime after 2:PM or even earlier. There behavior can be erratic, especially while driving or walking. They are not indigenous, but will argue that point.
We also have the elusive mongoose that some brilliant English retard decided would be nice to introduce. Then, we are beginning to have troubles with monkeys, that can almost behave as badly as the ones in the last pic..

Sho ain't rap or raggae, Wind. PW, there have been unsuccessful attempts to keep them from breeding. LOL . We are all dysfunctional families of one. Quick learners.

When I visited St. Maarten, I absolutely fell in love with the iguanas that were lounging on the rocks and boulders by waterside... Fabulous creatures that are anything but ugly! :)

I notice your sitting directly below a "Pick Up Sign" lol is that the way you get girls on the island ? :-) You write a great article for tourism ,perhaps that is your calling , be well and behave or just try anyway xo

Anik, you must have been looking at the bright green invaders. I luv both of them, - fried. Didn't notice the sign when I posted, Mani. Funny.

blunderbuss2, the iguanas weren't green but the same color as the rocks... it took me some time to realize the rocks weren't alone :)
    17. Anik Anik, 6 years ago
Ah wait... I'm stupid... the iguanas were in St. Thomas. I didn't see any in St Maartens. Sorry. :/

LOL post, Bb2, at each level and each pic!

No pics of the famous goats you wanted to swap?

Glad to see you so good looking at your "watering hole" :-D

P.S. Is that a kind of freezing condom on your bottle? ;-)))

Ank, you must not have been to SXM if you didn't see any. There is even a squad to get them off the runways. We have even had to swerve around them on take-off & landings. Now, really Kyra ! That's a Stella Artois. I was just washing down my heart meds. with a self-prescribed brew. I'm trying to grow a Stella tree. The goats were mowing the neighbour's lawn & I didn't want to bother them. Got to go! Here comes the neighbour!

blunderbus, I was there... but I arrived by ship (and only for a few hours) :)
    21. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 6 years ago
Your taxi or bus probably ran over a few & you didn't see them. They get all over the roads during mating season & I hate to see them hit. We try to avoid them, but they just stop and challenge the cars. Unfortunately, the green interlopers are faster. I'll put in a pic to show how thick they can get on the roads. I really luv them.

      Now I know for sure - bb2 WAS there.....lol

Antique, we really luv them. I prefer fried, but most people go for the stew. Yeah! We hunt them like you do deer. Very little wild taste. Never been whipped by their tail, but understand it is very painful. They also have sharp needle teeth & I understand, they don't let go. I enjoy them in the yard & put merde out for them to eat. They usually go after leaves of a certain bush. I've tried to make friends with a few, but they ignore people. A few friends have made pets of really young ones, but they are really too independent for that. They function strictly on instinct, & don't attempt to form a bond with others. If their eyes are open, they are simply looking for food ! You may even kiss one if it is asleep & not hungry, but I wouldn't advise it. I love them in the yard, just like other people in McDonald's Land like deer & turkey in their yards. I have a great "Sloppy Doe" recipe for anybody interested.
