The tradition of wearing the poppy ornament began in the UK as a Remembrance Day symbol of the fallen soldiers of WWI. In the US, the tradition began, for the same reason, in 1922 when the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars, service organization) began a distribution. After WWII, distribution for donation was, and still is, handled by the American Legion Auxiliary. The crepe paper poppies are a sad reminder that we humans need a better way to solve our problems.
