What is a road trip but another excuse to explore pastures new for treasures unknown? The early stages of the search were fruitless, but at the final stop I hit pay dirt. This unusual Victorian bowl by Welz is one of those fortuitous finds.
It is made from three layers of cased glass - clear over a dark red spatter which seems to spray outwards from evenly spaced trapped air bubbles, with a white interior. The bowl measures 9.5 cm tall, 13.5 cm across the crimped top rim, (shape reminds me of the spice star anise) & 11.5 cm across the clear, footed base.
There is just SO much going on in this piece - a swirling ribbed pattern interspersed with five circles enclosing stylised daisy shapes (but hard to see against that amazing bubble/spatter combination.)
Even better, there are no chips on the footed base, & it was a most reasonable price...plus it was found nearby another pretty Welz item, which I shall post tomorrow.
This could also have been the base of a three - piece fairy lamp, although it was most likely a bowl in its own right.

So very beautifully marine in feel. I expect a critter to stick it's head out very soon.

Many thanks, racer! Yes, it is rather like some kind of sea - anemone/starfish hybrid!

Lucky you, IronLace. An example of Welz creativity with their moulds. This mould, without the base, became a basket then they added a thorn handle!

Oops......... when they added a thorn handle!

Thanks so much, welzebub! Glad to know it's a bit of a rarity, too!
