Phänomen Genre 166 is one of the earliest Phänomen decors, and it came in various ground colors. This example is on rubin (ruby) glass with iridescent pulled feather decoration. Select PG 166 pieces are further enhanced with an engraved outline around the pulled feathers, as this one displays. The shape is an analog for production number II-73. The production notes for II-73 (which dates to 1900) do not list PG 166 as one of the decors. It does however indicate a possible alternate (earlier) production number, which is probably what this one is. Many of the series II drawings from this time had Series I counterparts.

Wow! I have never seen that engraving before. Congratulations again W.

Thanks, T - I think they mostly did it on early pieces where there was little to no contrast between the color of the feather decoration and the background. I had a green one that was the same way.

Dear Warren, as a retired Loetz expert myself, I would love to be in touch with you. I've collected and sold Loetz since the early 70's, worked for Sotheby's in Toronto as a consultant in the early 80's and lectured worldwide on Art Glass and Loetz since. Lately I've become very interested in the earlier 1890's Loetz pieces, along with some other quality Bohemian glass such as, Steinschonau and Haida. However, at times even experts come along certain items which even for them, are truly an enigma. I have a few of those and would love to share a chat with you regarding those one of these days, when I can send you a few good photographs. I sent you a friend request on Facebook. Wishing you all the best meanwhile and hope to hear from you. Antony D.M.
