This little sarcophagus box was spotted today in a charity shop. Styled in the manner of Tutankhamen's sarcophagus it caught my eye standing upright on a shelf, and in picking it up discovered it's actually a tiny little box lined with black velvet! As a lover of all Egyptian styled pieces, and harking back to a childhood obsession with Egyptian history and art and mummies too of course I took it. It fits in nicely with the other Egyptian style knick-knacks I've picked up over the years. I don't think it's valuable or old or anything, there's no stamps on the base and judging by it's weight seems to be made out of pewter. Cost €2 ($2.33/ £1.76)
Beautiful King Tut sarcophagus box, excellent detailing & love the velvet lining. He looks great with your other Egyptian items, I really like the black bird it reminds me of the Maltese falcon
Thanks Newfld- Ya I think the falcon is supposed to represent Horus's falcon, and can sometimes appear depicted as a man with a falcon's head too?
Great find... I love this kind of stuff. One of the greatest days of my life was when I got to go see the King Tut tour of artifacts from his tomb in 1978 when I was in my 20's. I was obsessed with archeology as a kid, and my fascination with Egyptology has continued throughout my life.
Really cool piece Lauren.
This is really great Lauren!:-)
Welzebub- that story fascinates me- what an experience! My God mother had a very similar experience- she got to the tombs at Giza and saw the sphinx up close too...that's the kind of thing that stays with you!
Thanks Caperkid!
Thanks TassieDevil!
Wow. That is really sweet!
Thanks Clockerman!
I have had several variations of this. Most often they carry a mummy inside. Love Egyptomania !~
Thanks PhilDMorris, sadly mine is missing the mummy....:(
