Rare Sherman Brooch, Missing Earrings. Large Jelly Belly Cabochons and Smaller Rivoli Rhinestones. Circa 1950
Received July 16. 2018.
There are no AB stones used in this brooch as it took me a minute to see the smaller stones with the many prongs were actually Rivoli Stones. This is a heavy pin and with the new Rivoli stones at the time when made, this was a time laboured piece which would have been a more expensive set for Sherman to produce. Each of the larger Jelly Bellies is a different colour. The main drawback for me are the missing earrings, otherwise I think of no other pieces made with these stones, so they are rare and seldom seen in Sherman Jewellery. The Rivoli Stones are each set with many prongs so it was labour intensive. Will try for a pic of the back later with a signature in the oval style which is the earliest time period for Sherman . Love to All !!
Another thing that I have noticed about this pin, and this is something that I have never experienced with any other apart from the bracelet, necklace as pictured : if you shine a lighted magnifying glass on the jelly belly cabochon stones you see lights in a centered oblong that actually look like they are lights emanating from the stones. I have tried to show this in the second photo. The effect is simply outstanding as it gives the illusion the lights are coming form inside the cabochons !!~
BTW, since there has been no write up at all previously on this pin - I garnered all the information from my careful attention when examining this pin. Also shown in the last picture is a bracelet which has some of the Jelly Belly in it, although the stones look like they have been AB'd, they are actually the many pronged time consuming Rivoli stones that were also used !!~ .....H

Great post Phil!
Beautiful brooch, the jelly belly stones are lovely & so colorful, bracelet gorgeous too, and I always appreciate the fascinating history on Sherman stones such as the rivoli - this is eye candy Phil!

If I messed anybodies post up, your the last person I'd want it to be..........
Hi Gillian, I thought Air Force One was still in Denmark or are you still using Trump's private plane ?? Anyway I am having pains in my stomach just thinking of you swooping down. As for reproductions they say it would be astronomical to reproduce Sherman. Hope that is true. I hope Mani comes early so she can let out the flying old doll catapult, beware : ~))
Simply wonderful!
Lovely pieces the both of them!
Love he colors and bling,... Phil..
What a interesting and beautiful kaleidoscope of colors.Very nice.
Another magnificent piece Phil and superb write up . I am on my way but please tell me it is cooler there than here . Much love !
Hi Eileen, not all Rivoli stones are reverse mounted. For instance later on when they were used for cufflinks they were not set reverse at all. I would have liked to see these reverse mounted but they are not. This one bracelet has such dark examples I have to look a long time to see if they are dark blue or black, and still cannot tell at times.
Thanks Caperkid for the heads up !~
Thanks again Eileen, I often learn many things from you, so I appreciate your friendship all the time !~
Eileen I am not familiar with margarita stones, will have to look them up, The stones I said were Rivoli is because I cannot say they are AB stones, they just look other than those so still sticking with Rivoli. Cannot see why they needed so many prongs but then Rivoli may need extra prongs, who knows ??
Thank you Jenni, I appreciate !~

What an extraordinary brooch, the intense colours are just stunning, and as you say, such a rare piece in every way! The Jelly Belly cabs are so vivid on the screen, I feel like I could reach out and touch them. Bracelet is also delightful.
