I’ve been meaning to put these two compacts on CW for years but never got round to doing so, now here they are.
I think that they are both Italian probably made around the 1940s. One as lovely Turquoise’s stone with pattern around the stones and is marked for 800 silver. The other has a multitude of different coloured stones, it’s only since I looked at them both together that they are slightly different. I put a photo with markings on the multi coloured stone compact, it Is stamped 925 and a marking besides which I can’t decipher there seems to be numbers and letters. As I said before they are very similar with both of the compacts having a textured finish, they are both really heavy I wouldn’t like to carry them around in my handbag.
Many thanks for looking.
I'm glad you posted these Jean, such great compacts. I want to live like, using a class piece to check my makeup.
Let's just ignore that I never wear makeup, just dreaming.
I've been buying compacts for about 10 years now. I started for two reasons, they're collectible, and mainly because they're small, and don't take up much room! :^D I try to find silver, or gold, and if the price is right, it's mine! The two that you have Jean, are really beautiful, I really like the multi-colored, eye catching, and I think would be wanted by any compact collector, you're lucky to have them! :^)
Hi Karen, I also collect cigarette cases but haven’t bought either recently, they are becoming expensive and I’m trying to keep to jewellery, Bernard Instone of course. I still have more of his work to post, unfortunately I’m in Spain and most of my pieces are in the UK but I do have a couple of pieces I’ll post in the future. I hope your keeping well.
Hi valentino, honestly you’d be surprised at how heavy these are. I have to wipe them over often because it’s so dusty where I live and with the textured finish they are difficult to clean without taking the patina off. I really appreciate your comment as always.
Hi billretirecoll, I love collecting compacts and cigarette cases. I display all of mine and they look wonderful, has you say they are small and don’t take up much room. As I said to Karen I haven’t collected any recently, the ones I personally like have become very expensive, but if their is one that comes along at the right price I would be tempted to buy. I really appreciate your visit thank you.
The mark you showed (191 FI) belongs to ENZO SERNESI,Via dei Bardi, 25 FIRENZE (Florence). The silversmith was registered in 1945 and was still active in late sixties. The mark of this form was used before 1968.
Thank you IVAN, I really appreciate your info. I have a bracelet that I need a bit of help on, I haven’t posted yet as I’m in Spain and the bracelet is in the UK. It doesn’t have any Hallmarks so I have no idea we’re it was made, it does however have makers mark, I would be interested in your thoughts.
Many thanks
