This cloisonne vase was one of my pride and joy. It displayed the highly masterful craftsmanship the Japanese attained in their cloisonne production. Ando was in Nagoya, and was a purveyor for the Palace of the Emperor Meiji. A status that was the peak of recognition for a master craftsman of decorative items.

The style is called wireless, a Japanese innovation, which left a smooth graduated enamel background. On this vase, you also have the standard cloisonne wire and enamel application for the large peony flower motif.

The metal rims are silverplate, and the base has the Ando mark.

It's stunning. I like any cloisonne, but the Japanese wireless art is often so subtle and beautiful, like a painting in glass. I can see why it is prized.
