Curious what year this was made. My boyfriend recently bought this for me at a garage sale. The diamond-shaped metal (brass?) tag says "ESTABLISHED 1844 HENRY LIKLY & CO MAKERS ROCHESTER, N.Y", with the words "Trade" and "Mark" on either side of that. Hinges are quite interesting (see the picture). The lock and key still work and the lock says "EAGLE LOCK CO TERRYVILLE CONN. U.S.A". Pretty good condition. I am guessing it was for holding clothes. Shipping tag says, "(772-A 3 29)", "Printed in the U.S.A", "Railway Express Agency Incorporated". With fields for the Person's name (For), Street address, City, State, Value and Date of Shipment but I can't read most of the writing.

I have a M. Maier trunk that is in excellent condition except it's been painted. Should I remove the paint or try to sell it as is?

Post your Martin Maier and we’ll be better able to contribute.

Likly made nice high quality trunks. Yours was made around the early 1900’s. Looks like it’s covered in vulcanized fibre. Nice to see a good size ‘steamer’ trunk such as this. Great find!
