Old trunk we were given and am wanting to know anything about it. The leather has very faint diamonds and stars.

1870's for sure. A note about the slat clamps as I have those on one trunk and Jim HMS trunks says they are from that period and they were only ever used for a very short period. Great looking trunk. Nice gift!
Also this trunk WAS a strap, and dowel pin method closure system the latches were added after as indicated by the holes above and below the latches on it now, Below is a snip-it from HMS antique trunks regarding latches.
Latches or leather straps.
Trunk latches were not in general use until 1872. Any trunk with latches was made after 1872. The strap, and dowel pin method (a leather strap, and buckle like a belt, and a dowel pin used to keep the lid from shifting side to side) was used prior to 1872, and even a little while after. (probably to deplete inventory)
