Hey guys here's one I finished off a few days ago. No makers label. Most likely late 1800's. Hope you like it.

Great looking trunk!! Love the different embossed metal and the latches. Is it zinc or tin? Non the less, looks really great, and for sure the different embossed pattern makes it! Great job Mike, again!!

Thanks Im4anythingOld. Hmm, zinc or tin? I believe it's tin, but how can you tell?
Thanks Vynil33rpm, Johnsmith, fortapache, and blunderbuss2.

Hi Mike, Just use a magnet on the embossed metal, if it sticks its tin, if it doesn't stick, it is zinc.

Hey, checked and turns out it's tin. I do have one that's zinc. Thanks for the lesson :)

Zinc again according to HMS Jim Cardoza was to expensive for trunks once they started using it and thus used for a very limited period. So if your trunk is zinc it is much more special for sure than a tin embossed. I would pick up any trunk that was zinc simply for this reason. Plus it has its own blueish gray color and need not be painted to hide it. So it also becomes an easy clean and leaving it as zinc with its natural hue is a big restoration time saver for sure.

Hmm, the one I have that's zinc was restored and no longer has it's original blueish/gray color. Hope I haven't harmed it's value. I'll post it soon to let you take a look see. Thanks again and greatly appreciate the info.

Hi Mike, harm its value..??/ good question ?? Pure zinc is still pure zinc and I am sure what ever was done can be removed if one really wanted to. But as the work is done I don't feel it should harm it, it still remains as far as I am concerned pure zinc regardless, which still sets it aside from other tin embossed trunks. But for me personally in my future... not coloring a pure zinc trunk and leaving it in its natural state would be as close to original condition and finish as one would want.

Also mike the one posted now beside yours that jscott0363 & KathyKay bumped forward, is a pure zinc trunk covering and is stunning just as it is, in its natural state. And you can see they never painted the zinc. so this piece is as close to original as I would want. Yes I can clean the slats and metal and pull the cleanness as a whole forward, but I would never consider painting the zinc. Here you can clearly see the natural bluish gray hue that zinc carries.
