Thrift shop find today for $.99. It measures about 4" long x 3" deep x 2.25" high and appears to be pressed glass. I think that I have it set up the way it was meant to be used, if the cigar tube was a cigar. I only found images of one of these, on ebay, and it sold for $80, apparently due to its rarity. The seller speculated that it was possibly a memento of the 1892 Chicago World's Fair. Other mentions of these date them to circa 1900. It is marked in the glass "Pat. Pending" and "Diamond Matches". Some wear at the corners.
looks like some text in front of 'DIAMOND'; what might that be?
Good eye, TallCakes. Unfortunately the corners are worn on this piece and all that remains is maybe "IE". Couldn't have been a long word as there is not much space for letters there.
Ah, from the other example I found, it originally said "The Diamond Match Co.". The beginning and end of that is worn off on mine..
Nice find!!
Thanks for your comments TallCakes and jscott0363! I was quite surprised. I wonder where this has been?
