I received a call recently from a gentleman in Australia recently with an interesting dilemma. He had been given a very expensive Gucci wardrobe trunk as a gift that he didn't want, but wanted to give it to his son as a birthday gift. The problem was that the trunk was probably designed for a lady, rather than a man, and he wanted it to have a "Safari" look so that it didn't have such a "feminine" feel. His son is a very famous golfer and wanted to be able to use the piece on his jaunts around the world. When I expressed concern that when finished, the trunk might end up taking a beating at the hands of baggage handlers, he assured me that it would be handled carefully as his son flew in his own private jet! OK then, sounds like a fun project! I stripped the exterior of its plastic covered heart design and replaced it with a strong duck canvas. I reused the leather binding after dying then sealing it. and replaced the shiny gold hardware with leather corners, new black draw bolts and covered the hinges with leather as well. I removed the interior pink lining and replaced it with an off-white drill fabric with a few leather straps and accents , where needed. Although I don't usually roam the same corridors in airports as he does, I hope to one day spot him, with his (my) recreation rolling along beside him. Although I'm not a big fan of golf, I would like to have his autograph!
