I found this at a yard sale and even the person who sold it to me didn't know what it is. I have shown it to several "Old Timers" that are older than I (67) and still can't find out what this is. The two wooden parts are connected to the metal shafts and they slide back and forth. Does anyone have any idea what this is?
I asked a friend about this. Here's what she says:
"When I first saw it I was pretty sure it's a sailmakers tool for sewing canvas. I googled "antique sail making tool" this web site http://www.webhistorian.co.uk/pages/index.php?id=92 from the UK came up and sure enough, 4th image down is a very similar device."

I found one of these with the original box. It is for making designs on canvas rugs. Came with directions on the back of the box.
I had the same mystery when my father found one in my grandmothers attic. :) Then I came across the one in the aforementioned box and mystery was solved. You can thread yarn or cord through it and sew designs on canvas rugs.
