Since I started collecting Japanese glass I have wanted one of these glass boxes by Kyohei Fujita (1921-2004).
Fujita was awarded the order of Person of Cultural Merit in 2002 by the Japanese government as a recognition of his stellar glass creativity and career.
The most treasured of his works are these glass boxes, known as Liuli boxes, which he started making in 1973 and continued making until his death. They encompass traditional Japanese aesthetics with contemporary glass making and the decorations are representative of natural beauty.
Fujita made these boxes in a variety of shapes and sizes, and there is also variation in decor. Some have metal collars inserted at the join, this one does not.
Pictures cannot express the ethereal beauty of this box; it shimmers and moves in your hand.
A small box 5.3cm x 5.3cm x 9cm, in red and white plum blossom decor.
*Note the photos here are from the seller, they are so much better than mine were! One thing I have noted about Japanese sales sites is the high quality of the photos. Best in the world I think!

Anik we all have that one piece, this was mine. Lots of sales of lesser glass to cover it's cost!
A rich and yummy cake Bill. Thanks mate!
It's very Japanese I agree Ivonne, and thanks for our appreciation!
Congratulations - you got a gem!
Oh, Karen, I'm so happy for you to get this wonderful piece after desiring it so long!
And very glad to see it here too :-))
It makes me think to Klimt too!
Congratulations my friend! :-)
Isn't it just the best feeling to get that special, longed - for piece at last?
This box is sheer magic...looks like it could contain a tiny universe...I am imagining that it holds all the beauty, pleasure, & kindness that one could possibly dream of...a wee prism of paradise!
These are both fascinating and beautiful. It’s like winning the lottery when you find something you really want that’s hard to find.Hopefully now you will find some more.
Thanks Harry, I'm sure you know how influential Fujita has been.
It has a very impressionist look I think Pascale, and Klimt too with it's dotty beauty. Thanks for being so happy for me!
IL, it's taken years and lots of searching for one I could afford, in the meantime watching prices go up and regretting others I missed. I am over that now, and this one is perfect for me.
I keep holding it and opening it and like you say, putting thoughts inside. You get it. Thanks.
Jim, great comment. I can hope for another one day, but am so content now and forever if I don't.
Proof positive that the best things come in small packages.......WOW!
A little wonder indeed Peggy.
Hope the move is complete and is working out well. Yeah, I'm sure there are still some boxes of glass to unpack! :))
Thanks, Karen, I'm liking it here and I'll be getting back into glass once I've set up a photo corner :)
This is gorgeous!
Thanks raven :)

You really have to raise your hands in high praise to someone who can create like this. The design alone is magnanimous and the shape is true beauty. I am so happy you got this incredible creation !~
