I am working (along with others) in creating a decor language to better understand Franz Welz glass between 1920-1935. Welz (unlike other companies) has good research and documentation to work with although this grid is not documented. Welz (like Kralik and Loetz) had a few shapes that were produced in many decors; sometimes as many as 30.

"The Grid" represents shapes (or groups of shapes) that had many different decors. They also make an incredible display opportunity...Ie scalloped fan vases. I prefer to collect decor variations while others like families of the same decor in different shapes.

To start with I will show a few grids that used the snap tool; This gadget allowed glass blowers to construct and decorate glass without a pontil mark. I hope to show 4 to 5 different grids and try to find a connection between the grid pieces and the wider range of glass they produced.

To use: Look ACROSS for shape variation; DOWN for color variations

    Tango Grid Parameters :
    No pontil
    Round rim
    Applied thread
    Light weight
    Thin glass
    Just under 8" in height
    4 Colors
    5 Shapes

    THE GRID
1 - This shows the 5 main shapes with related variations. notice the colors are Yellow, Orange, Red, and aqua Aqua with variations in each shades- one could argue that the colors are Yellow, Gold, Orange, Tangerine, Cherry red Aqua and sky blue but I am trying to keep things simple here.... Cause then it gets weird. Aqua has been seen without a rim application and (in a different vase) with an internal casing of white; Yellow also comes with an internal white casing. As hard as I try there are wholes in the grid (you'll get used to this)- I just can't find pictures of vases in every shape I believe should exist.

    THE OUTLIERS:

    2. Light green. I didn't know if I should include this color in the Grid because there are only two shapes and all have the internal white casing glass

    3. Pink line decor . This piece belongs in the area between two grids...This one shares the goofy shape from this grid and the decor from the next grid you will see

    4. Orange with a Bicorn rim. This piece shows a common shape to the next grid but in a color of this grid

Questions and comments are welcome- J
