I am pleased to share a new sample of my Poschinger glass collection. This egraved and enameled vase was designed by Julius Dietz for the Poschinger Glassworks Buchenau (Bavarian Forest, Germany) and a similar piece was most probably exhibited at the World Fair in Paris in 1900. This assumption results from an article in the magazine “Deutsche Kunst und Dekoration” (German Art and Decoration), edition 11/1900, pages 518 and 534 (second image). The vase appears rather large with 14 cm (5 1/2 in) in height and 20 cm (7 ¾) in diameter. The light opal cased vase shows a stylized crawling salamander and ribbon ornaments on the front side. Both are engraved and gilded, whereas the salamander shows a matt green finish with gilded highlights. The background displays a subtle rainbow iris. The decor is rather untypical for the Art Nouveau period and can hardly be compared with other glass products of the time and even with other art glass made by Poschinger Buchenau.
The vase is fully signed “Ferd. von Poschinger Glashüttenwerke Buchenau Bayern No. 116” in the pontil (etched and gilded). A nearly identical vase with the sequence number 117 is part of the collection of the Museum Regensburg and belonged to the former sample collection of the Buchenauer Glashütte. No other example is known so far.
