26" x 12" x 3" "Swing-o-matic Bump Gate". Patented by W.H. Koch, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Patent No.2,629,191 February 24, 1953 . Manufactured by International Steel Company, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Drive up with your vehicle, bump it and it swings open. Gravity returns it to the closed position after you pass through. No more getting out of the car or truck to open and close the gate. The model is in rough condition compared to some I've seen, but I am pleased to add it to my collection.

Interesting .....my type of gate :)

Understand the bump-open part, but don't understand the gravity closing. Does this open fully while vehicle goes thru, or does the center "bumper" have to ride down the side of the vehicle. Doesn't the gate have to rise up in order for gravity to close it?

blunderbuss2 - I do not have first hand knowledge so I'm just guessing. You get up a head of steam and bump it about 50 mph, then gun it so the gate doesn't hit you on the return. The chain must store energy to swing the gate shut. Does that sound logical?

buckethead - Thanks for your comment.

I was thinking that it had to be by somehow storing energy in the chain by gravity. Otherwise, I agree with your scenario LOL !

I wonder if this is why there are so many old beat up pickup trucks?
