Short story: I picked up this pretty purple necklace thinking it was glass, but on closer inspection I could see that it is actually faceted amethyst beads. At a whole £5 it's more than I usually pay for necklaces but in this case it was definitely worth it!

Long story: My collecting started when my mum gave me the two pebble necklaces in the last photo. I didn't know anything about them, but spotted a similar mixed gemstone necklace in an antique shop window. When I went in to ask about it, they told me what the various agates and gemstones were, and that these necklaces were popular in the Art Deco era. Mine are strung on the original silver chain. The antique shop also had a similar necklace made from faceted amethyst beads which I fell in love with at the time, but couldn't afford the high price tag. I've been collecting art deco gemstone and glass necklaces ever since, usually managing to pick them up for one or two £. I was just casually looking at necklaces to pass the time while my kids were looking at toys in a local charity shop which is usually rubbish for jewellery when I spotted this, and no, it's not glass! I can see inclusions and planes in the gemstones. I finally have my amethyst necklace, and all for just £5! It looks to be recently re-strung, hand knotted on purple cord with very new looking French wire, so definitely not on the original substrate but at least I know it's secure. I'll be wearing this a lot!
Sorry about the photos, it's so dark here at the moment.
