I purchased this lovely decoy a couple of weeks ago. I have zero knowledge on decoys, and after two weeks of searching the internet, I am not much further along. I would appreciate your knowledge and opinions.

only information on the history is that I purchased this in Wisconsin. I did post these pictures in an antique group,. Have gotten some opinions from well meaning people, who I can only assume know nothing about vintage/antique decoys ;)

I can hear a faint rattle when I shake it..why I decided to shake it..because the "split" and the metal staples made me think it was produced this way from the start, maybe to add some weights inside? This is my feeling and only my guess. However makes more sense than a suggestion from another person who thought the staples were a "fix" from the wood cracking (that "crack is straight as an arrow, imo not a crack). Also has been suggested that this was a purely decorative piece, manufactured new- I am not feeling this either, as who would spend the time to make a forgery down to the tiny holes in the bottom (which, imo, would align to some kneel). Also someone said that all decoys were painted, as unpainted one do not attract waterfowl, the paint must have come off, I did not even answer that suggestion, as it sounded unfounded. There are no intricate carvings of feathers or such, not decorative, imo. Imo, it looks functional, a useful, tool for hunting.

Any real knowledge is greatly appreciated.
What a vast subject decoys are, and I do not have any knowledge, just a feeling the some opinions from non decoy people has seems very off, at best.

I just joined this site, so please be patient with my lack of any knowledge and or if I am doing the posting incorrectly. I did list as Mystery Unsolved, as again, the topic of decoy is way more vast than I ever could have imagined. Would love to learn a bit about decoys and especially the possible past history to this beauty.

    thank you
