Looks to be an ambrotype as I can see the weave of the cloth it is sitting on. Ambrotypes are photo negatives (on glass) that can be made to appear as a positive image with a black background.

Ambrotypes were made from about 1854- 1865 in the US. They continued to be made in the UK for much later in the 19th century.

Please confirm the photo itself is on a sheet of glass? An additional photo of it with a black cloth behind it may help details appear.

Any touches to the surface of the image will cause damage.

Your image appears to be in poor condition. I don't see a soldier. Due to condition most of the value is in the matting and is minimal, but probably less than $20 (depends on size).
