Here’s a full plate Ambrotype in it’s 8x10” original frame with it’s orginal gold paper matting. The subject is two gentlemen sitting on the Canadian-side of the Niagara Gorge, with the American Falls in the background. Circa 1860
Butch & Sundance !
Looks pretty precarious! Makes me think "and then there none." 3
Actually there were several professional photographers (on both US and Canadian side) whose business was Niagara Falls background views like these. They must have had some wealthy customers as most images are larger plates (Whole, half).
This particular view and the frame looks more like 1870s. I know that many UK photographers continued with ambrotypes late in the 19th century than American photographers (rare to find a post 1865 US ambrotype). Maybe Canadian photographers took their lead from the UK?
