"Wake up Sleeping Beauty", said a voice as a leather and steel covered toe bumped against my head. "It's time to get behind the blue line", the voice insisted. I pried my eyes open from their resting place in the Colorado Boulevard gutter just in time to see a smiling policeman move on to the next trespassing sleeper. Like us teenagers, he had likely been up all night and probably responding to our revelry. This was his moment of retribution.
That wasn't the only time I attended the parade but I learned something that year. After that I didn't sleep in the gutter.
I am watching the parade right now on KTLA channel 5. I waited overnight to see the parade in person. We weren't quite prepared for the cold santa ana winds. In later years my nephews were in the LA All City band that is in the parade every year.
