I suppose that unions and fraternal organizations still hold annual organizational conventions but for the first half of the 20th Century they were a big deal. They put on parades, passed out paraphernalia, and, most importantly to the local economy, filled hotels. Perhaps most remembered for the revelry, these conventions were an opportunity for expanding your business and social networks. Aaah - the days before the internet.
I started saving these medals that had an image of the LA City Hall. Everything is still Los Angeles related but the original intention has expanded a bit. Items shown range in ages from the 1890s through the 1970s.
