This vase has been identified as Skrdlovice #5988. It stands 6 3/8" (16.2 cm) tall with a body diameter around 2 3/4" (6.7 cm) and a flat, polished base. It has a maroon interior suspended in an azure blue heavily indented body. These indentations lead to endless possibilities for distortion. (Could there be an analogy hidden in that?)

      Great vase. Total jealousy!

Beautiful, but not Chribska... It's Skrdlovice, designed by Jan Beranek in 1959 as pattern 5988 in the most desirable colorway (often referred to as 'red core'). Really, really wonderful piece. :)

Thank you Anik. I am far from fluent when it comes to this modern Czech glass. Your enthusiasm leads me to think you know much more about this than I do, so please let me pick your brain a bit before I change the post. I saw the 1960 Skrdlovice catalog piece #5988. That catalog illustration did not indicate the "sommerso" styling and the size, at 30 cm, was nearly twice the size. The illustration in the Chribska catalog wasn't quite "sommerso" either and seemed a little less thornier but the size seemed to match up better. So I guess my questions are - did Skrdlovice make these in different sizes? and/or, did Chribska adapt (copy) the design?

While awaiting further confirmation I did catch a glimpse of a very similar vase in the same colors gathering dust in the museum catacombs here - https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMFoZhI-IsWwCjhgEzizZ62kCjn0tPcYVlhSdQ1qM4YzVzSif-wIqsod28fPu9LWQ?key=blNMMk15eVlnUWxhd0xQd0VpakxYcjZ5N2Zya3RB

I sent you an email with an image from the 1959 Skrdlovice line art showing this design. Also, for what it is worth, I consider Anik to be extremely knowledgeable about this region and era of glass.... :-)

Hi artfoot :) The 5988 was made in a variety of sizes. I had one as small as 16cm and one as big as 30-something cm (and plenty of in-between sizes). You can find them is a variety of colorways, from solid (not so common) to 2-tone (common), to the one you've got with red, green and blue (considered the most desirable color among many collectors). Some 5988s also glow bright green under UV light.

      It's a lovely find!

Thank you Anik - I appreciate your assistance. I've ordered the Skrdlovice book. :+)

It's a great book and a very interesting read -- I highly recommend it!

I just noticed your vase has got the mysterious I=I inscribed into the base. Fascinating.
    12. artfoot artfoot, 6 years ago
I wondered about that but figured it was just a couple of scratches. I looked at it now through my loupe and, sure enough, there is an I=I inscribed.

The Skrdlovice book refers to the I=I inscription... it can be found on some 1950s Skrdlovice pieces, though there is no definitive answer why :)
