I found this at a local junk store. One is currently for sale on line for $800 that looks as if it has a replacement base. One sold at auction for $615. Here is the listing for that auction. This one was repainted red also:
Art Deco Shoe Doorstop
Cast iron, wood
20th century
Red high-heel shoe with scroll-shaped throat and pointed toe box, mounted on a curvilinear wooden base, unmarked, repainted, ht. 4 1/2, lg. 9 in.
Does anyone know who made this?
Thanks to fhrjr2 for solving the mystery!
Just found on the internet that the oldest version of Cinderella had her slippers made of gold: "The story probably is of Oriental origin. In the oldest known version, from China in the ninth century, the heroine loses a slipper, as it happens, but it is of gold."
Please provide the height, width & length. These were originally mounted on either wood or cast iron bases.
Nice piece!! You could kick down a door with that!!
I missed your dimensions above sorry for my error. The dimensions are right on for not being a reproduction. This stop is listed under story book and nursery rhymes. They are also listed as unknown maker because most were actually made in the United Kingdom. They are listed as Cinderella's Golden slipper and in the UK they were used as a door stop but they would also plant a flower in the shoe so it became a door stop planter. In the UK they are listed with a value of $100 to $150 USD. I suspect the value depends on whether they are common in a given locality or if they tend to be more of a rare find. I don't collect stops anymore and have gotten rid of all but one Hubley which I intend giving to one of my sons.
Very cool doorstop!
fhrjr2, Thank you for all of the great information!! It is very helpful. Mine does have a wooden base by the way. Someone told me that they thought it may be Cinderella's slipper. I like it, but would never pay what they got for it at that crazy auction.
yougottahavestuff,
I may try that one day :)
Newfld,
Thank you!
keramikos,
Yes, I saw that one with the base painted red (very poor paint job). The prices are all over the place. I am glad mine was not repainted.
