I love this malachite cameo, despite the chipped nose. But I have a dilemma. Would it be better to leave the nose in its current damged state, or rather have it restored by a professional? I am in two minds. What would you do?
I'd seek advice in a respectable auction house.
That's a good thought Golgatha!
Beautiful piece, both the classic cameo & malachite
Thank you Newfd.
This is a hard question to ask of us. You have no real idea what the final result will be from a "professional". Is it a true antique, & have you had it appraised & compared with similar undamaged pieces ? Hard call since you can't have a real idea how it will turn out. If you ever market it, a dealer would probably spot the repair. I don't collect cameos, but luv them.
really beautiful piece! i'd get it appraised by someone reputable and ask for it to be appraised with and without a nosejob.
I agree with everything said: she's lovely; restoration would be very difficult to do properly, even if you could find someone willing to take it on; outcome cannot be guaranteed. An obvious repair would detract; an inconspicuous one would have to be declared if offered for sale and I think most collectors would see it as undesirable.
How expensive are nose jobs these day ?
Thanks to all for your opinions. Very much appreciated. Blunderbuss2 the piece is a true antique yes. it is Victorian and carved from Maltachite.
lol re the 'nose jb' but I guess that is exactly what it is!
I think I will opt to leave her as is. I do agree that 'restoration' may not be desirable. and that the outcome is uncertain.
