Need help to know what I have. I found this duck decoy in a local thrift store. It's keeper but I'd like to know more about what I have. It appears to be hand carved, hand painted and I think the paint is original. The eyes are painted on instead of glass. It's about 19 inches long and 7 inches high. I believe it was actually used as a decoy.

The decoy has one or two marks that look like it was hit by a BB.

Looks like it was intended to be a Mallard duck. The holes in the bottom tend to suggest it was actually used as a decoy. It would have been attached to a line or anchor at the bottom to keep it where intended. Unmarked decoys are about impossible to trace to a maker. Up north during the winter old timers would sit by the fire and whittle decoys. Most everyone hunted and most made their own decoys. They usually weren't marked and when they wore out they would be used for fire wood.

Thank you fhrjr2 for your feedback, the decoy is just one of those things you enjoy owning but not sure why, maybe it reminds me of relaxing by a lake.

Must have been a very realistic decoy, as it appears to have been shot in the back of the head ! LOL !! You'll learn to ignore me. Like everybody else on CW.

You're right, it does have a head wound. I saw a few other BB marks but missed the head shot. Good eyes!
