It's a modern interpretation of a Chac Mool figure, from Mesoamerica, associated with the Maya and Aztec cultures. The nearly life-size Pre-Columbian ones have been found at archaeological sites over a wide range of Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador.

Although they have been studied, and written about, since the early 1800s, they still remain a mystery as to origin, original name, and even their purpose, although many seem to have an association with Tlaloc, the Mesoamerican rain god, and were found in places where sacrifices to the gods were made.
